Registry Redemption
Our registration policy is one of continuous registration (also known as 'positive deletion'). This means that all domain names that have been registered in the Channel Isles Registry remain registered until they are cancelled.
This means, normally, that unless you explicitly tell your registrar you want to cancel your domain(s) or you have agreed with your registrar that they may cancel your registration(s) in some circumstances (e.g. if you do not pay them on time), then they will remain on the Register and a fee will be charged for each year..
When a registrar cancels (positively deletes) a domain name under the contract of registration, your contract with us (as well as with them) comes to an end.
When this happens, the domain name does not however, automatically become available for registration. Upon the (EPP) delete command being sent to the registry by the registrar, the cancelled domain name enters the 'Registry Redemption' status, which lasts for 5 days, during which the domain may be restored on payment to the registry of £25.00.
5 days after domain cancellation, at the registry's discretion, formerly-registered domains may either become available on the 'aftermarket' (the secondary market) or they may be removed from the TLD zone entirely, thus becoming available for registration 'ab initio' i.e as if they had never previously been registered.
